When last did YOU leave a book review?
I am always listening to a book. I may also be reading another and definitely have more on my ToBeRead list. I make a point of putting up a review of each book I listen to or read.
‘Why, oh why do you make work for yourself?’, I hear you ask. Well, it is simple really. I would like to let the author know that their work, their job, is worth the effort they have put in. Whether the story they have taken the time to write was something I enjoyed or not, I want them to know! I feel that it gives them a kind of validation for the hours it has taken them to produce the product.
Scared to tell an author what you think of their story? Don’t be! They are people just like you and me, and they enjoy hearing from their readers.
So, how can you leave a review?
- The simplest is to put your thoughts on any social media platform – just tag the author so that they will find it.
- Join www.goodreads.com – it is a very popular book review site (for free!). There you can explore what others are reading and perhaps find similar stories that you might enjoy. You can join a book reading challenge to help encourage you to keep reading.
- Leave a review on the website from which you bought the book. E-books and audio books often have a link you can click as you reach the end of the story.
You don’t have to be fancy with your review. Here is a review I did for a book I read recently. It can be as simple as ‘I enjoyed this story and look forward to more from this author’ or as complicated as a critic would do it. You don’t only need to say what you did or did not enjoy in the story; you can also comment on the cover, or what drew you to this particular book. My only recommendation is ….keep it clean! No one likes to see ‘potty mouth’ in a book review.
Most of all – JUST DO IT!
Do you review books you read? What do you include in your reviews and do you encourage others to review their book?
